Can acrylics be done on normal paper and still look ok? I've bought some but haven't used them yet, and I was wondering if I need to buy canvas/special paper to use them. Cool tutorial! :)

I'm sorry if my comments are short or I only leave a :+fav:, I appreciate art, but don't always feel I can critique it. :)

You can paint Acrylics on anything. They stick to most things. I used to use mount board before I use canvas. If it bends, just paint the back of the card with a cheap household acrylic paint. I really wouldn't waste your time trying to use them like w/colours, they look really awful and show up the brush strokes. Use them more like oils, which is what they were invented to simulate.
Be very careful of your brushes, clean them very often whilst painting or you will be buying a lot of new brushes. It dries very quickly. If caught out, a soak in hot water may help, but it can still go hard all around the ferrule.
Also, you really need one of those 'stay wet' palettes, to stop your paint from drying out to quick. IT DOES DRY QUICKLY! If you don't have one, you can get bye with a shallow tray, a couple of pieces of moistened kitchen roll [don't over wet it, or your paint will just get runnier and runnier] and then place a sheet of tracing paper on top of this. A normal sheet of cheap A4 paper will do, but it doesn't last very long. This shouldn't wet your paint, but it stops it drying out, as all the surrounding paper is moist. Cover it up with a piece of cling film over night and they should be ok the next day too. You'll work it out, once you've tried it.
I hope this doesn't put you off. They are fun and the quick drying time does have many benefits. Just be careful, it can eat up small brushes, if not regularly cleaned. Oh, and don't think that leaving it in the water jar will be ok. It takes a little longer, but it still dries underwater, lol. :D

Hi. :bump:

OK thanks! I saw some acrylics on feathers- and they look really cool! So I knew you could use them on different material, but I suppose normal photocopy paper without a backing would buckle right?

I looked at a tutorial where they showed you how to keep it moist the same way you suggested it. :)

:o_O: They dry out underwater..

Thanks for helping me out!

Photocopy paper is just shit, don't use it. It may not buckle, it depends how much water you put with it. Use some old card instead for practising.
It does dry out under water. Not totally, but enough to mess the brush up.
Any problems, just ask me.:D

They can but they may not be archival. As well if you use thin paper it may buckle, as you generally thin acrylics with at least a little water. Experiment with different types and see what works for you :)
:iconlutrasilvereye:
Sure thing! Thanks :)
